SPEECH: In the Queen’s Speech, Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised to “level up” education COLLEGES across Worcestershire have welcomed government plans to increase investment in adult education. The government has said it will introduce new legislation through the Skills and Post-16 Bill to support its lifetime skills guarantee - as set out in this week s Queen s Speech. The bill will put reform promised in the FE White Paper into law, including flexible loans for adults to access higher-level training at college or university level at any point in their lives. It will also give employers a statutory role in planning publicly-funded training programmes with education providers, through a ‘Skills Accelerator’ programme.
MORE than 500 people have signed a petition as part of the latest plan to fight cuts to courses at Evesham College. Support has been garnered from Councillor Robin Lunn, leader of the Labour Group on Worcestershire County Council, with residents vehement in their opposition set to meet in conjunction with petition organisers University College Union (UCU) via Microsoft Teams tonight (Tuesday, 6pm). Warwickshire College Group (WCG) announced in December plans to close Malvern Hills College and shift across students to Evesham. Hair and beauty, engineering, construction, motor vehicle and digital courses will run from Evesham but access to higher education – courses designed to prepare adults to progress to the next level of education, including university study – and supported learning is set to be transferred to Pershore seven miles away.
COLLEGE: Cllr Beverley Nielsen announced a meeting was taking place with WCG THE college group handling the ongoing closure of Malvern Hills College has hit back at accusations they are not working to secure its future. WCG, which announced in November its plans to close the college, moved to clarify a number of issues raised by Cllr Beverley Nielsen, chair of the Malvern Hills College SOS Task Group. A spokesman said: “We would reiterate that the announcement by WCG to cease operations at the Albert Road site in Malvern was taken with the greatest reluctance last November. It primarily stems from the Government cuts in adult education funding over the last decade – a point made this week by the FE Commissioner who sadly accepted that such decisions are having to be made across the college sector in an FE Week feature.
