A Promised Land By Barack Obama - The People s Friend

I was very excited when former US President Barack Obama published “A Promised Land” in November 2020. I am strangely fascinated by American politics. Perhaps that’s because I avidly devoured every episode of TV’s “The West Wing”! The first volume of Obama’s presidential memoirs has been eagerly anticipated since he left the White House in 2017. And there was a copy in my Christmas stocking lucky me! I’m not a big reader of autobiographies. My preference is normally for fiction, but I was prepared to make an exception for such an important book. And I was not disappointed.

It was a whole new experience for me. Of course, with the country still in lockdown, the festival programme was entirely virtual. That turned out to be a good thing. It meant people from all over the world could attend our event if they wanted. And there was no restriction on numbers, either. On the downside, I had to become familiar with the technology required to make it all happen! And hope and pray that my internet connection didn’t go down . . . What could go wrong? Well, quite a lot, actually. Beforehand, my fear was that the event would be cat-bombed by one or more of my furry friends.

How many of these have you read? What a great week it has been for women writers! In an announcement that broke their own rules, judges awarded the Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2019 jointly to two fabulous authors. Margaret Atwood is the oldest ever winner of the Booker at the age of seventy-nine. Her winning book, “The Testaments”, is the follow-up to “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Bernardine Evaristo, the first black woman to take the prize, won with “Girl, Woman, Other”. Very well done to both of them, especially for breaking new ground. But do you know the nicest thing? In a joint interview on Channel Four News last night, the two authors were warm, generous and genuine in their admiration for each other.
