METRO DETROIT For many people, 2021 is a welcome transition away from the unprecedented global turmoil in 2020. Both the Pantone Color Institute and Benjamin Moore Paints annually release a color of the year, and their selections for 2021 reflect a desire for optimism, grounding and soothing.
Pantone’s dual color of the year is “Illuminating,” a sunny yellow, and “Ultimate Gray,” a practical gray; while Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is “Aegean Teal,” which combines green, blue and gray tones.

Before long, both colors will begin to show up in retail, bedding, tableware and soft accessories for the home, said Karen Vangsness Allen of Design Studio B.
“You’ll already be exposed to using them together,” she said. “You’ll be buying a print and you’ll already be seeing Ultimate Gray and Illuminating mixed together in patterns. … It’s a cliche, but a throw pillow is easiest.”
A new year is a good time to rethink your surroundings. It’s one of the reasons that leading paint brands spend months thinking about what will be the “color of the year” with inspiring photos ready to go by January.
It’s easy to get excited by the possibilities and beautiful palettes, especially after months of looking at the same four walls and being
really ready to make a change to your space. But it can be more difficult to know how to incorporate those new trends and ideas.
That’s one of the reasons that Jennifer Kraner, and her team of 14 at Big Sky Design, recently opened the largest design showroom in the Wilmington area at 5815 Oleander Drive.
