Power utility Eskom has won the first round of its bid to undo a multibillion-rand contract with Econ Oil.
On Thursday, the Johannesburg High Court suspended a dispute resolution process that Econ Oil and Eskom entered into over a fuel oil contract awarded to Econ Oil, Sasol and FFS in 2019.
In court documents, Eskom said the value of the award to Econ Oil was R8 billion.
Eskom has described the contract as riddled with serious irregularities . In March 2020, its board decided to cancel the contract.
Econ Oil has defended the contract, arguing that it has become the target of a carefully orchestrated disinformation campaign .

Fresh allegations have emerged against Eskom CEO André de Ruyter, with a second executive accusing him of making another three senior appointments without following due process. Business Day has been reliably informed that last week Eskom’s board reversed, within a day, the addition of the names to the terms of reference for the independent investigation, to be done by senior counsel advocate Ishmael Semenya. He would have investigated eight questionable appointments by the CEO but three names have since been removed from that list.
A senior Eskom official bent over backwards to benefit a major Eskom fuel oil supplier, Econ Oil, including getting former Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba to open a new plant on behalf of the company in 2013, according to a Bowmans' investigative report.
