DES MOINES, Iowa Marvin Esquivel Lopez, charged with killing Rossibeth Flores Rodriguez and her two kids, testified in his own defense Thursday.
He said his wife Mariah Lopez, who testified earlier this week, was not even home at the time of the killings.
On the stand, he described his version of the events, centering it around self-defense. It all allegedly started with Rossibeth called him saying his wife had poured soap in the rice she was making.

DES MOINES, Iowa A Des Moines police detective testified Wednesday there was no sign of a struggle inside the home in July 2019 when Rossibeth Flores Rodriguez and her two children were killed, and the Polk County Medical Examiner told jurors the mother attempted to shield herself from the attack.
Marvin Esquivel Lopez is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Esquivel Lopez and her two kids, 5-year-old Ever and 11-year-old Daniela. We found two children dead in what appeared to be a bedroom, Polk County Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Akers testified during the trial. One of them was between two beds and appeared to be attempting to cover her face. The other was laying in bed.

The trial of a man charged with killing a mother and her two children in 2019 began Tuesday with his wife testifying that she saw him shoot and kill Rossibeth Flores-Rodriguez.
Marvin Esquivel Lopez, 33, faces three charges of first-degree murder for killing Flores-Rodriguez, 29, who went by Rosie, and her two children, Grecia Daniela Alvarado-Flores, 11; and Ever Jose Mejia-Flores, 5. All three were found shot to death after police responded to Esquivel Lopez s Des Moines home late on the night of July 18, 2019.
Esquivel Lopez, also known as Marvin Escobar-Orellana to federal immigration authorities, said after his arrest he had returned to the United States after previous deportations in 2010 and 2011.
