(WFIE) - The Evansville Fire Department is looking to fill out its staff. Division Chief Mike Larson says firefighting is more than a job, it’s a career that welcomes everyone willing to work hard. “I would just encourage anybody. It’s something that is bigger than themselves,” explained Division Chief Larson. “Come out, give it a shot, take the test, go through the process. If you get on the list and you are not interested, then turn it down, but at least give yourself the opportunity and experience to talk to some of the people and go through the process.”

(WFIE) - Firefighters responded to a fire involving a detached 3-car garage on the 2800 block of Oak Hill Road on Sunday morning. According to the Evansville Fire Department, fire crews discovered the garage fully engulfed in flames when they arrived at 1:59 a.m. Officials say the fire was quickly extinguished around 2:10 a.m. However, an extensive overhaul was necessary in order to locate any hidden spot fires.

EFD: Train strikes vehicle, closing part of Franklin Street

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  A woman escaped an encounter with a train on Evansville s West Side with minor injuries, according to Evansville Police. EPD spokesman Sgt. Nick Winsett said a woman in her 70s attempted to complete a U-turn to get out of its path, but instead ran into the side of the train, he said.  Winsett said the woman had an injury to her hand, but was otherwise fine.  The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Franklin Street, near the Pigeon Creek Bridge. A portion of Franklin Street was closed in the aftermath of the wreck.
