Reader says Evans Farm hearing showed American democracy in action

Editor: This past week I had the opportunity to witness grassroots American democracy in action. I attended the public meeting of the Sussex County Council held at DelTech. I watched and listened to over six hours as the council heard from citizens and groups who presented and discussed a conditional-use application regarding a proposed development by Linder & Co. The County Council meeting was capably chaired by Mr. Michael Vincent, council president. Mr. Vincent was prompt, efficient and orderly in the way the meeting was conducted. Throughout the meeting Mr. Vincent was in control of the proceedings and ensured that both the attorney for the applicant and the those opposing the development were given the opportunity to make their cases.

Sussex should deny Evans Farm proposal

Nancy McDermott May 4, 2021 I am writing this letter about opposing the Evans Farm apartments they want to put up. I was born and raised in Long Island, N.Y., and Long Island used to be just like Delaware.  Now there is so much congestion, roads are horrible to drive on, taxes are so high. That is why my husband and I retired and moved down here to this beautiful state. People don’t realize what they are doing when they keep on building and building. I understand some building of things but this is too much, too fast. Everybody should go to New York and then they will realize what they are doing to their state. Please, I hope this project gets shut down.

Evans Farm project not appropriate

Karen Hrycyna  May 4, 2021 I object to the proposed zoning changes to allow high-density housing to be built on the Evans Farm parcel.  My appeal isn’t a knee-jerk not in my backyard.  I am asking our representatives to vote no to the proposal. The developer’s proposal states the need for more moderate housing.  What isn’t mentioned is that the Sussex County master plan allows for high-density housing - just not on that land. If the developer wants to build apartments, they should go do it on land already zoned for it. The developer is not being altruistic. The zoning change is more profitable for only two parties - the land owner and the developer.  While I appreciate the financial considerations, the developer is not going to live in the neighborhood after the construction.
