Senate President Lawan condemns attacks on correctional facilities

Lawan stated this in Owerri on Friday while inaugurating a road project completed by Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo. He said that the aim of the attackers was probably to cause a distraction for the Imo government or even the Federal Government. The road which was named after a former Senate President, Late Chief Evan Enwerem, was one of the infrastructural projects inaugurated to mark Uzodinma’s one year in office. Gunmen had in the early hours of Monday attacked the Correctional Centre at Owerri, releasing 1,844 inmates from the facility. The gunmen also attacked the state police command headquarters and freed 600 suspects from the cells. As of Wednesday, the NCoS said on its website that it had a total of 84 inmates back in custody. It said the figure included those who did not flee in the first place, those recaptured, those who voluntarily returned, and those returned by their relations, traditional rulers and religious leaders.
