Subscriber only Beach hoons are on notice to behave or the entire stretch of beach between Evans Head and Ballina could be closed to four-wheel drives. In what has been described as a compromise that will put the fate of the beach in the community s hands, Richmond Valley Council has voted to close only one of its access points at this stage. Ballina Shire Council closed the Patchs Beach access at South Ballina last year. It s understood work is continuing to close other access points which are managed by National Parks and Wildlife Service and Crown Lands. In the meantime, Richmond Valley Council will close Boundary Creek.

Subscriber only More beaches on the North Coast could soon be closed to four-wheel drives, with Richmond Valley Council set to follow Ballina Shire Council s lead. The 4WD access points at Moylans Lane and Keith Hall Lane at South Ballina were closed last year due to safety and environmental concerns. Following the Patch s Beach closure, 4WD access to South Ballina beach has still been available via the National Parks entrance and Empire Vale Rd. These accesses are not managed by Ballina Council, but the council is working with government agencies and neighbouring councils to advocate for the cessation of 4WD activities on South Ballina Beach.

Starting today, the 8th Canadian Hussars of the Canadian Armed Forces will be conducting Exercise Sharp Shooter at the Salisbury Range in Boundary Creek.
Residents in the area may hear the gunshots and see a slight increase in military and civilian traffic.
