Tuesday, reporter Sam Stockard reported Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett and Attorney General Herbert Slatery have both joined their peers in signing letters that announce their disapproval of the For the People Act, a voting rights package that passed in the U.S. House March 4.

The package, which passed along party lines 220 Democrats voting aye and 210 Republicans voting nay includes items intended to make voting easier, such as same day voter registration, the ability to register to vote online and automatic voter registration for Americans over the age of 18. It makes the purging of voters from voter rolls more difficult, prohibits interference in voter registration and adds transparency to campaign finance issues.

The people of Tennessee confronted a major issue this week when the legislature’s Civil Justice Subcommittee defeated an alarming Resolution that threatened to destroy judicial independence and abolish the separation of governmental powers that protect every citizen who comes before our court system.

The state legislature will no longer consider removing a Nashville judge from her position.
Lyle came under fire from the state legislature this month when a Republican state lawmaker filed a resolution pushing to remove her from the bench over her 2020 ruling to expand absentee voting during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tennessee Rep. Tim Rudd, R-Murfreesboro, who chairs the House subcommittee on elections and campaign finance, said he filed the bill in response to Lyle’s 2020 ruling an action he deemed judicial overreach.
In comments Tuesday, legal experts spoke in favor of Lyle.
