FOUNTAIN A suspected car thief sustained life-threatening injuries Monday after being shot by a sheriff s deputy in a park, which the man swam across a creek to reach in a bid to outrun the law, officials said.
The man, who appeared to have a firearm, was approached by a Fountain police officer, who suspected him of car theft, at the Love s Country Store in Fountain around 3:30 p.m. The suspect fled, swimming across Fountain Creek and eventually reaching Willow Springs Ponds, Lt. James Vidmar of the El Paso County Sheriff s Office said at a Monday night press conference.
It was there that law enforcement began negotiating with the man, who was shot at least once by a sheriff s deputy several hours later. It is not known if the suspect fired a weapon.

Three people were shot dead and another was injured Wednesday evening at a fourplex near Fort Carson, according to the El Paso County Sheriff s Office.
The incident occurred about 5 p.m. at a housing complex in the 4300 block of Loomis Avenue, near Stratmoor Hills Elementary School, southeast of Colorado Springs. Numerous parties reported numerous repetitions of gunshots, said Sgt. Deb Mynatt, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff s Office.
Of the four adults shot, one was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, Mynatt said, adding that the incident was isolated and that there was no known threat to the community.
She did not say whether arrests had been made.
Suspect arrested in Palmer Lake shooting
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) The El Paso County Sheriff s Department confirmed a suspect in a deadly shooting in Palmer Lake is now in custody.
On Friday, the Regional Fugitives Unit, Bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco, Firearms, and explosives, and the Colorado Springs Police Department Tactical Enforcement Unit found and arrested Jose Alfredo Romero, 36.
Deputies say Romero was booked into the El Paso County Jail and is charged with First Degree Murder.
The Palmer Lake Police Department initially responded to a shooting Thursday at 4:26 p.m. that happened in the 700 block of Highway 105.
At the scene, deputies and officers found a woman dead from a gunshot wound.
