West Darfur Wali (governor) Mohamed El Doma reported yesterday that the number of victims of the ‘treacherous attacks’ on El Geneina has risen to 132 deaths and another 208 injuries. The wali explained that the attackers belong to ‘well-known militias’ affiliated with the former regime of dictator Omar Al Bashir.
He said in a press conference that the shooting in El Geneina had stopped but that the violence, plundering, and torching of buildings continued in the peripheral neighbourhoods yesterday. Both heavy and light weapons were used.
The wali described the conditions as ‘stable to some extent’ with food, electricity, and water shortages. Especially vegetables and bread are in short supply. He noted that electricity and water supply had briefly returned on Wednesday evening but that the supply was again interrupted soon after.

The United Nations revealed today that 56 people have been killed and 132 others were injured in the continuing clashes that erupted on Saturday evening in the state’s capital El Geneina. The wali (governor) of West Darfur expects a state of emergency and a curfew to be imposed in the city.
Thousands are fleeing the fighting and at least one rocket-propelled grenade hit a hospital whilst another hit a UN compound.
People from El Geneina told Radio Dabanga that the sound of heavy fighting and explosions continued for the second day in a row yesterday. They said that the sound came from southern, eastern, and western areas of the city and that houses are burnt in the areas around the Kerending camps.

A committee from the Public Prosecution office arrived in El Geneina, capital of West Darfur, yesterday morning to investigate violent recent events in Kerending camps. In Nierteti, Central Darfur, a man was murdered by two gunmen on Sunday evening.
In January, large groups of armed men from Arab herding communities attacked El Geneina and the two Kerending camps near the capital, killing at least 163 people and leaving more than 123,000 people displaced.
The committee decided to issue arrest warrants for everyone who was involved in the events and raise requests related to the juridical immunities of some of the perpetrators to the Public Prosecutor.
The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minawi (SLM-MM) called the Memorandum of Understanding, signed between the Sudanese government and the International Criminal Court (ICC) concerning the trial of Ali Kushayb, “a first step in achieving justice for the victims of war and genocide in Darfur” in a statement yesterday.
