HOLTVILLE, Calif. (AP) Thirteen people were killed Tuesday when an SUV carrying 25 people and a big rig collided on a Southern California highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.
Twelve people were found dead when first responders reached the highway, which winds through fields in the agricultural southeastern corner of California. Another person died at a hospital, California Highway Patrol Chief Omar Watson said.
Authorities do not yet know if the driver of the 1997 Ford Expedition, who died in the crash, had stopped at a stop sign before crossing into the path of the big rig around 6:15 a.m., Watson said. The big rig hit the left side of the SUV, which appeared to have been pushed off the road that’s about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of San Diego.

13 people were killed in horrific crash after entering US through hole in Mexico border fence, officials say
The 13 people killed when an SUV was struck by a semitruck in California’s Imperial Valley are believed to be among dozens of undocumented migrants who entered the United States through a hole in the border fence with Mexico, the US Border Patrol said Wednesday.
At least 44 people had managed early Tuesday to enter the US through a 10-foot breach in the border fence near Interstate 8, the Border Patrol said in a statement.
Surveillance footage reviewed by border agents shortly after 6 a.m. showed two separate vehicles leaving the area where the fence was breached in what officials are investigating as “smuggling events.”
