Bolivia holds traditional dance parade with masks, Covid-19 tests 2 minutes read
El Alto, Bolivia, July 16 (EFE).- A traditional folk dance parade in honor of the Virgen del Carmen was held in the Bolivian city of El Alto on Friday, with face-covered dancers getting tested for coronavirus amid a ban on alcohol.
It is the first “mini” parade held since the Covid-19 pandemic reached Bolivia in March 2020.
The parade is to honor the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of La Paz that celebrated 212 years of its freedom struggle against the Spanish crown.
Local authorities allowed around ten fraternities to participate in the parade, with up to 50 dancers in each.

Bolivian Folklore Festival Returns Despite COVID-19
Bolivians returned to celebrate the Virgen del Carmen festivals after the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of nearly all celebrations last year.
Dozens of dancers lined up at COVID testing units to safely participate in the parades.
The festival in the city of El Alto, adjacent to La Paz, brought together 11 dance groups, each with 50 dancers and a crowd of spectators amid a slight decline in COVID-19 infections and a slow progress in vaccination.
The initiative came after informal vendors, embroiderers, and musicians pressured the mayor s office to reactivate the economy.
In Bolivia, these festivities honouring saints and Catholic figures bring in millions of dollars into the informal sector, which accounts for more than 75% of the country s economy, according to various studies.
