Last week the Chiltern Society warned that the chalk aquifer – which it says provides drinking water to thousands of people in the region – is “under threat” from HS2’s planned operations for the 10-mile-long Chiltern tunnels. It said in a statement on its website: “When plans to tunnel beneath the Chiltern Hills were first announced in 2010, the Chiltern Society and others raised concerns relating to the potential for significant damage to both the chalk aquifer, which supplies drinking water to many thousands of people regionally and in London, and to the Rivers Misbourne and Chess, which are internationally rare and threatened chalk streams that r

Cataumet Art Historian To Give Zoom Talk On Spirituality

Cataumet resident Elaine A. King is bringing her expertise as an art historian to the topic of “Spirituality in Contemporary Art,” in a virtual Art Talk on Tuesday, April 20, at 6:30 PM. The program is sponsored by the Falmouth Art Center and will take place on Zoom. In explaining her topic, Ms. King wrote, “The term ‘spiritual’ refers to a yearning to seek something superior than the self, the desire to search for the source of life and the nature of death, and the acknowledgement of elusive forces at work in the universe beyond materialism.” Ms. King clarified that the talk is not about religion. “Art that touches on spiritual essences is not automatically linked with any specific religion or dogma.”

Number of majestic trees due to be cut down by HS2 in Great Missenden saved

Almost half of “majestic” trees that were due to be cut down by HS2 have been saved. Protestors joined forces with Buckinghamshire Council and the Chilterns Conservation Board to save the trees, in Leather Lane, Great Missenden, which were set to be felled to make way for an HS2 access road being built off the A413, between Great Missenden and Wendover. Last month, revised designs came to light for Leather Lane, an ancient ‘holloway’ and a deep, V-shaped track, flanked by wildlife-rich hedges and trees, which has been used by residents for thousands of years. Bucks Council said despite the Chilterns’ ‘holloways’ featuring in the detailed design principles – which HS2 must adhere to – the latest engineering led designs showed that HS2 Ltd was planning to cut down significant numbers of mature trees along the length of the existing Leather Lane, and “destroy” parts of the ancient trackway.
