Taiwan yet to meet lockdown criteria: Cabinet 05/21/2021 09:09 PM CNA file photo Taipei, May 21 (CNA) Facing rising public concerns over the possibility of a lockdown, or an upgrade of the national COVID-19 alert to the most serious Level 4, the Cabinet has given its assurance that Taiwan has not yet met the criteria to merit a lockdown. Deputy Health Minister Hsueh Jui-yuan (薛瑞元) told the press after a weekly Cabinet meeting on Thursday that whether or not the alert will be raised from the current Level 3 to Level 4 depends on certain conditions and an official announcement by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), based on its judgement.

Taiwan withdraws advisory limiting use of AZ vaccine jabs 05/21/2021 11:03 PM CNA file photo Taipei, May 21 (CNA) Taiwan s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) has withdrawn its recommendation that people taking oral contraceptives or undergoing hormone therapy not take the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, based on recent research findings. When Taiwan began its rollout of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on March 22, the CECC issued a warning of unconfirmed risks of an increased rate of blood clots associated with the vaccine. Based on that warning, the vaccines were not recommended for people taking oral contraceptives or undergoing hormone therapy, until Friday. CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) told CNA that the CECC made the recommendation at that time after some people getting the AZ vaccine overseas reported getting blood clots.

CNA photo May 17, 2021 New Taipei, May 17 (CNA) The New Taipei City government on Monday made public several locations in the city mostly traditional markets that were visited often by people confirmed to have COVID-19, and urged anybody who went to those places who has developed symptoms to get tested. On Monday, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported a total of 333 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, 148 of which were from New Taipei, the most populous city in Taiwan, including 41 from Banqiao District. Since Saturday, the number of locally transmitted cases in New Taipei has risen to 320, CECC data showed.

Taipower initiates power outage at 8:50 p m

Taipei, May 17 (CNA) State-run Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) initiated a power outage starting at 8:50 p.m. Monday in certain designated areas across Taiwan due to a shortage of supply caused by a sudden surge in electricity consumption, the company said in an emergency notification.
