A large, well-fed pig in a barrel accompanies the Morrison governmentâs announcement of the $1.2 billion tourism subsidy (âCut-price flights to help lift tourismâ, March 11). Of the 13 tourism regions to benefit from the cut-price ticket subsidy, eight are in marginal seats and four of the five others are in safe Coalition seats. The ALP and Greens-voting Byron Bay holiday region scores precisely zilch funding. Thatâll teach them.

Itâs interesting to read the destinations included for half-price flights in Morrisonâs latest spending splurge. The Gold Coast qualifies but Byron Bay does not; Launceston makes the cut but Hobart misses out. The Gold Coast and Launceston happen to be in Liberal electorates but Byron Bay
It’s Sydney Lesbian and Gay Mardi Gras festival time. LGBTQI people are enjoying what some call “gay or lesbian Christmas”. It’s not quite the same in the era of COVID, but a contained version of the famous street parade will be beamed into living rooms on Saturday.
The public face of Mardi Gras, which began in 1978 with a protest parade, is remarkable in a nation that has been deeply prejudiced toward gay and lesbian people. Part of the power of Mardi Gras for older generations was that it removed queer sexualities from the “secret” confines of semi-legal bar and club locations and private parties to the public street. Being on the front page of the newspaper no longer meant you might be going to jail.

2021 off to a strong start with the opening of Bistrot 916 in Potts Point

Dan Pepperell, Andy Tyson and Michael Clift s hot-ticket Bistrot 916 has opened its doors, dishing up a slice of Paris in Potts Point.
Chef Pepperell (of Restaurant Hubert and Alberto s Lounge fame) has been limbering up with a line-up of steak au poivre, duck frites and oysters.
But he and his gun team of Clift (ex-Rockpool) and Tyson (former Hubert sommelier), have given a nod to the prominent site s previous occupant, the Dan Hong-led Asian-inspired Lotus. Boudin noir spring rolls? Yes, please.
From the elegant light fittings to the classic chairs and cloth-covered tables, Bistrot 916 has the timeless look of a restaurant stayer. It s a promising start for an industry hopeful that 2021 will prove a superior vintage to the one that preceded it.
