TYLER, Texas (CN) – Texas claims in a federal lawsuit the Biden administration has destabilized its health care system by revoking approval of an extension to its Medicaid plan, a move it says could rip a $35 billion hole in its budget.
Texas is one of just 12 states, all led by Republicans, that has declined to expand Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act, which former Democratic President Barack Obama signed in 2010.
The Lone Star State is the longtime holder of the ignominious distinction of the nation’s highest uninsured rate. If it expanded Medicaid, an estimated 1.5 million adults would be eligible for joining the program and the federal government would pay 90% of their coverage costs.
WASHINGTON â The White House and lawmakers are seeking to build momentum on what they view as a more comprehensive policy solution to address the nationâs rising rates of maternal mortality and morbidity.
Advocates and lawmakers are working on comprehensive legislation to curb maternal deaths, which has emerged as a bipartisan priority in recent years.
Maternal mortality, or death during or up to a year after childbirth, is a growing problem in the United States. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed nation.
The maternal mortality rate was 20.1 per 100,000 live births in the U.S. in 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That number was more than double the rate â at 44 deaths per 100,000 live births â for non-Hispanic Black women.

WASHINGTON The Senate Finance Committee split along party lines in Thursday s vote on President Biden s nominee to head CMS, voting 14-14 to report the nomination to the full Senate without a recommendation for confirmation.
Committee Republicans votes against the nominee, Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, largely did not have to do with her background or qualifications; several said they agreed that she was qualified for the position. Instead, they were objecting to the Biden administration s decision on April 16 to revoke a 10-year 1115 Medicaid waiver extension for the state of Texas, approved in January by the Trump administration. She sounds to me like a very qualified person, and I appreciate her willingness to meet with me on this issue, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Finance Committee, said of Brooks-LaSure. And frankly, I was looking forward to voting for her nomination, but this unprecedented action by the administration threatens the secur

Texas’ Republican leaders were abruptly reminded of that Friday, when the Biden administration announced it was rescinding an 11th-hour waiver extension issued by the Trump administration relating to the Medicaid program. The waiver has continued the flow of federal dollars to Texas to prop up hospitals that treat low-income, uninsured residents even as the GOP-led state has refused to expand Medicaid through Obamacare.
To hear Republicans such as Gov. Greg Abbott tell it, the president cruelly yanked the rug out from under some of the state’s most vulnerable Texans while we’re still in a pandemic, no less. Biden is “deliberately betraying Texans who depend on the resources made possible through this waiver,” the governor said in a statement.
