Man rescued from Buffalo National River after forced to spend night in elements

Image: Sample rescue basket A man who was injured while hiking in the Buffalo National River (BNR) this past weekend had to be rescued, but not until the next day due to weather conditions. The 60-year-old from Bella Vista, whose name was not released, was hiking with his son when he suffered an injury and was unable to walk out on his own from a remote part of the Ponca Wilderness. According to a press release from the BNR, responding park rangers were met with heavy fog and a thunderstorm moving through the area. After assessing the injury, weather conditions and considering the time of day, it was decided to conduct a rescue the following morning, due to safety concerns. Overnight gear was taken to the hikers, so they could shelter in place.

After assessing the injury, responding park rangers decided to start the rescue on the following morning, Sunday (Feb. 28), due to heavy fog, a severe thunderstorm moving through the area and the time of day.

Temporary road closure continues at Kyles Landing in BNR

JASPER, Ark. – Road construction continues in the Kyles Landing area of Buffalo National River (BNR) in Newton County. A temporary road closure is in place to allow contractors to resurface the road from the National Park Service boundary to the Kyles Landing Campground.BNR officials say unexpected weather delays have impacted the project. If there are no further weather delays, it is now expected that the project completion date will be March 10. Visitors are asked to continue to refrain from driving in this area, or parking in such a way that blocks access to the work location or private driveways.
