Zion man who was no-show for end of trial sentenced to 19 years

Updated 5/27/2021 5:00 PM A still-missing Zion man who skipped out on the final day of his trial back in March was sentenced to 19 years in prison Thursday. Brian A. Yarbor, 37, faced up to 30 years in prison stemming from one count of the manufacture and delivery of cocaine. The jury also found him guilty of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.   At a hearing Thursday, Lake County Circuit Judge Daniel Shanes sentenced Yarbor to 19 years in prison to be served at 50%, meaning he could be out in 9½ years. Lake County State s Attorney Eric Rinehart praised the judge s decision. Separate from the underlying weapons offense, Mr. Yarbor s decision to evade the courts during the sentencing phase of this case further justifies a lengthy prison sentence, Rinehart said.

Defense expert: Marni Yang too short to have murdered Rhoni Reuter

Updated 5/18/2021 4:17 PM A world-renowned forensic pathologist concluded there is no way Marni Yang could have fatally shot Rhoni Reuter in 2007, according to documents Yang s defense team filed in court Tuesday as part of her ongoing effort to win a new trial. Yang is serving two life sentences for the murder of Reuter, the girlfriend of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle, who was pregnant with their child.   However, Dr. Cyril H. Wecht said in a video released Tuesday that Yang is too short to have been Reuter s killer. I believe that the person who shot and killed Rhoni Reuter would have had to have been 5 foot, 10 inches or taller, Wecht said. I do not believe that Marni Yang, who is only about 5 feet or so, could possibly have inflicted that fatal gunshot wound.

Court TV via AP, Pool   Updated 4/20/2021 7:18 PM How politicians representing the suburbs and others responded Tuesday to the guilty verdict of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd. The fact that for many, today s guilty verdict was in question, tells us we still have a long way to go in bringing accountability to policing. Still, today s verdict is a step in the necessary direction of reforming the systems that have entrenched racism into the police departments of this country: the codes of silence, the inadequate disciplinary systems, the bloated budgets, and the fearmongering rhetoric whenever police departments come under sc

Robert Peters… State Senator Robert Peters (D-Chicago) released the following statement after a Minnesota jury found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of the 2020 murder of George Floyd: “Today, a jury decided that Derek Chauvin will be locked up and will face justice for murdering George Floyd, but we are still a long way from delivering George and his family the justice they truly deserve. “True justice would be creating a society where police don’t murder unarmed Black people. “True justice would be ensuring people like George Floyd receive the support they need.
