House panel OKs measure imposing stiff penalties for destruction of heritage trees

Published February 24, 2021, 10:55 PM The House Committee on Natural Resources recommended Wednesday, February 24, the approval of a bill providing for the sustainable management of heritage trees and the imposition of hefty fines and long prison terms against persons found guilty of destroying or vandalizing them. Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga Chaired by Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga, the House panel  also approved House Bill 8430 proposing to declare Lumbo Spring in Dolores, Quezon a protected Watershed Reserve.  The bill is authored by Quezon Rep. David C. Suarez. The committee also took up HB 4781 seeking to declare century-old acacia trees in Binalonan, Pangasinan as local heritage trees.  The bill is authored by Pangasinan Rep. Ramon V. Guico III who failed to show up during the committee deliberation.

Publisher says sorry for erroneous books

SunStar + February 10, 2021 THE publisher of a Kindergarten textbook titled Masayang Buhay (Binagong Edisyon) apologized for erroneous printing of a portion of the book amid backlash from stakeholders. A portion of the learning module depicts the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) of the Cordillera as having dark and curly hair. In a letter to Mountain Province Representative Maximo Dalog Jr., Ruth Valerie Catabijan, vice-president of St. Matthew s Publishing, said the book in question was published in 2001 and has long been out of print and was withdrawn from circulation. Catabijan added that subsequent publications of Masayang Buhay (Binagong Edisyon) previously authored by Dr. Felicidad Remo and Avelina Espelita and released in 2004, 2009 and 2016 already contain modifications to the section of the issue being raised.

SunStar + February 04, 2021 FOLLOWING the uproar on Facebook after a recent post gone viral depicting Igorots in a negative manner, Benguet legislative caretaker Eric Go Yap urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to immediately correct these learning materials. Yap said although it is not clear whether the materials form part of a textbook, a module or a test sheet, it is an insult and an obvious form of discrimination and a mockery of the rich culture in the Cordillera. “I strongly condemn these photos circulating online. It is unbelievable that these made its way to the learning modules of our students. Nakakagalit. Nakakadismaya,” Yap said.

DepEd-CAR Director Estela Cariño, an Igorot herself, called the attention of other regions and schools division offices using such modules to make the necessary changes. When a wrong concept keeps repeated, this might be accepted as the truth that is why need to respond to it right away and for those responsible to correct it immediately, Cariño said. Some of the modules that went viral malign Igorots according to their physical appearance and clothing.
