RACINE â The Racine Unified School District is set to receive approximately $69 million from the federal government over the next four years for pandemic recovery efforts. Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, asked district officials on Monday how they plan to spend it.
The money will come from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, created as part of the initial COVID-19 stimulus package approved by Congress in March 2020, signed by Donald Trump and updated with additional funds through the second stimulus in January.
âThe last year has certainly been challenging for everybody,â Vos said during Unifiedâs Legislative Committee meeting on Monday. âEvery parent, every taxpayer, every business owner. I think every American has really gone through tough times but the good news is we are coming on the other side of the pandemic in so many ways.â
RACINE â Racine Unifiedâs summer school programs are set to look a little different this year, as the district aims to help participants catch up from learning lost during the pandemic.
âWe are looking at additional services to account for the instructional disruption of COVID-19,â Janell Decker, Racine Unifiedâs executive director of curriculum and instruction, told the School Board on Monday night.
The district is hoping for 2,000 participants in this yearâs summer school program. Around 1,800 students participated in the last pre-pandemic summer school in 2019. The districtâs student population at the last official count in January was 16,450.
While Unified had formerly offered summer remedial reading and math classes as well as enrichment classes, all reading and math classes this year will be âskills basedâ in an effort to fill gaps in student learning that occurred over the past year.
