On Stage Harold Mabern and Eric Alexander Share KUVO’s archive series “On Stage” features a performance from (protégé) reedman Eric Alexander and (mentor), pianist Harold Mabern, recorded in the Phyllis A. Greer Studio. Harold Mabern was Alexander’s instructor at William Patterson College, and they had been band mates for two dozen albums since then. Jazz Times profiled the musical relationship in 2006: “What sets Alexander’s relationship with Mabern apart is the symbiotic way it has elevated both musicians. Since Mabern prides himself on his work as a sideman, he’s never put much energy into leading his own group. Alexander’s growing notoriety has supplied the pianist with both satisfaction and a regularly working combo in which he’s encouraged to contribute ideas and tunes.”
