The Oaks Women’s Club Scholarship Committee recently announced that 16 young women receiving diplomas from Sarasota County high schools this spring have each been awarded $5,000 scholarships.
“These outstanding women were selected based on their exceptional academic ability, financial need and leadership skills both within their schools and the community at large, Oaks Women’s Club Scholarship Chair Beth Gehring said. The financial need this year was greater than ever, so it was vital that the global pandemic does not impede our mission,”
Scholarship Co-Chair Marti Byers added, “The Oaks Club community has been so generous in supporting our fundraising activities. As a result, renewal scholarships will be offered to the 2020 recipients if they have maintained a 3.0 GPA during their freshman year.”

Nicole Bowen-Wiley first started learning about natural medicine, herbs and teas when she was looking for a way to help ease her father’s pain from neuropathy in his legs and her grandfather’s pain in his knees. As she learned more about natural healing and pain relief, she became more and more invested in and knowledgeable about the topic. Now, she and her family have opened a retail store, Elemental Rocks and Herbs, which offers natural healing to the Dawson County community.

On Friday, April 16, fourth-grade students and teachers from Kilough Elementary School launched a weather balloon into the sky as part of their study on weather and weather patterns.
According to Amy Tankersley, the fourth-grade science and social studies teacher who organized and carried out the weather balloon project, students have been studying climate and weather for several weeks leading up the balloon launch.
“We’ve been studying weather patterns and we also had a unit on space, so the weather balloon kind of ties into both,” Tankersley said. “We’ve been tracking the weather every day and we’ve talked about the air pressure and how it’s going to make the balloon pop when i
