Petersburg School Board approved budget revisions at its meeting Jan.12 for this fiscal year. The pandemic has presented unforeseen challenges but by shuffling staff, transferring funds, and the State being more lenient with its rules, the school district has made ends meet. KFSK’s Angela Denning reports:
Karen Morrison has been the Finance Director for the Petersburg School District for a decade and she knows her numbers. She was
recently named Business Official of the Year–or what’s known as the Finance Director of the Year–by the Alaska Association of School Business Officials (ALASBO).

Petersburg is seeing its highest COVID-19 active case count since the start of the pandemic and officials are cautioning about the virus spreading in the community. This outbreak has changed operations this week at the hospital and the schools. Petersburg’s emergency operations center Tuesday
announced three more COVID positive test results, all in the same family and connected to other cases already announced. Petersburg is now reporting 10 active cases with eight new positives in the last week and a 2.4 percent positivity rate. Spring Break will stay in March, says Petersburg School Board
Posted by Angela Denning | Dec 9, 2020
Petersburg School District’s calendar has a six day Spring Break in March.
Petersburg School Board voted down a proposal to change spring break at their meeting Dec. 8. Most school district staff wanted to spread out the six day break throughout the spring. However, school board members said it was too late to make the change. KFSK’s Angela Denning reports:
Petersburg is pretty isolated as the only town on Mitkof Island and so far, there hasn’t been a local outbreak of COVID-19 like in many other communities. School has remained in-person for most of the year. To help keep COVID out of the schools, most district staff stayed home for Thanksgiving. And they plan to do the same thing for the winter break coming up this month.
