Emergency services are at the scene between junction 19 (Portishead) and junction 20 (Clevedon).
Police have closed two lanes on the southbound carriageway at around 2pm today (May 13).
Delays on the route are building.
Traffic monitoring site Inrxi says: Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M5 Southbound at J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead). Congestion to J18 (M49 interchange). Lanes Two and Three (of Three) are closed between the slip road.

M5 traffic: Bank holiday travel causes heavy delays on motorway between Somerset and Bristol
Lanes were closed due to flooding and a crash earlier today
Traffic is very slow on the M5 motorway as bank holiday travellers head home after the weekend.
Both carriageways have been delayed, with flooding on the southbound side meaning lane four (of four) has been closed between junction 19 (A369 Martcombe Road and Portishead) and junction 20 (Ettlingen Way and Clevedon).
A crash earlier today (Monday, May 3), on the northbound carriageway, added to the delays and caused tailbacks between junction 22 (Burnham-on-Sea) and junction 21 (A370 and Weston-super-Mare).
The collision happened just after 1.30pm and lane three (of three) was closed, delaying drivers heading towards Bristol.
