Some Iowans said they see a new law banning mask mandates as freeing, while others believe it limits school, city and county officials ability to make the right choices for their communities.
On Thursday, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law a ban on school districts, cities and counties imposing mask mandates, effective immediately. The mask mandate ban is a part of a larger education bill that would expand open enrollment in Iowa, but has already prompted changes and reviews for schools that still require masks to change course in their last few weeks of the year.
The law prevents school boards and superintendents from requiring employees, students or other people from wearing facial coverings on the property of both public and private schools, with exceptions for when facial coverings are necessary for an extracurricular or instructional purpose or required by existing portions of Iowa law governing ear and eye protection.
