YAKIMA, Wash. Last year, an onslaught of emergency COVID-19 restrictions threw U.S. Army recruiters across the country for a loop, leading them to ask: How do you recruit people if you can’t meet them in person?
Yakima-based U.S. Army recruiter Sgt. Candice Saxon answered that question, turning to a medium that might better reach the younger generation.
“I think I had been working from home for a week and I texted Sierra, ‘Hey, I want to start a podcast,’” Saxon said.

YAKIMA, Wash. Since the pandemic began, local food banks have been feeding an unprecedented number of food-insecure families; hundreds of those families received free boxes of frozen meals Wednesday morning in Yakima.
“It’s a little bit shocking because I think a lot of us don’t realize exactly how many of our neighbors are in need of food like this,” said Nicholas Helms, director of the Salvation Army in Yakima.
The Salvation Army held its third large-scale, drive-thru food distribution during the pandemic Wednesday at State Fair Park. While the event was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., cars were lining up at the Gate 5 entrance as early as 7 a.m.

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. Two shootings within a half-hour of each other in the Lower Yakima Valley on Sunday left one man dead and two teenage boys “seriously injured.”
FBI spokesperson Steve Bernd said authorities responded about 9:30 p.m. to a shooting near White Swan High School, where two teenage boys were found to have suffered gunshot wounds.
“It’s a tragedy to see young people shot like this,” Bernd said. “It has been a very violent year on the reservation … This is something I think the residents in the valley want to see us try to put a stop to.”
