A chemical reaction at a metal plating company on the city s east side Thursday morning created a cloud over a small portion of the area and temporarily forced nearby businesses to shelter in place.
Officials said the reaction began after workers at Imagineering Finishing Technologies in the 2700 block of Emerson Avenue near I-70 were cleaning and stripping a metal part using nitric acid. Moisture in the air must have gotten onto the part, workers speculated, causing it to produce orange gas when they put it into a container.
The orange cloud could be seen over much of the area around Emerson Avenue between East 30th Street and I-70 from about 9:30 a.m. until it began to dissipate shortly after 11 a.m.
