Mary was the subject of a widely read eulogy written by her father after her death 100 years ago next week on May 13, 1921, one month shy of her 17th birthday and three days after her head accidentally struck a low-hanging tree limb as she rode a horse. When Mary was born in 1904 in Emporia, about 50 miles southwest of Topeka, her father had already spent nine years as editor of the Gazette and become widely known as an unofficial spokesman for Middle America.

Between Monday and Wednesday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment saw 470 COVID-19 cases, 14 deaths and 33 hospitalizations. Overall, the state has seen at least 310,115 cases and 4,999 deaths over the course of the pandemic. The number of more-contagious COVID-19 variants also increased. As of Wednesday, there were 481 cases of variants of concern across 37 counties. Sedgwick County maintains its large lead in the number of variants, at 217 cases. Next is Shawnee County, with 83 variant cases reported.
