The unmoored liberal & others

PITY the liberal. His mooring rope has been cut or stolen. The pegs on the banks of the Ganga, Volga or the Danube have disappeared. Where the hell does he hitch his boat? I, for one, am in a quandary

Backstory: If the Media Fails to Read the Farm Struggle Right, Irrelevance Awaits A fortnightly column from The Wire s public editor. Photo: Pawanjot Kaur Rights16/Jan/2021 The year is barely two weeks old and it has already seen events that have made visible the dangers of the cling film of alternative reality that has come to wrap itself tightly around societies across the world. The Capitol Hill violence in Washington D.C., US served to highlight the hubris of a president convinced that he could upend history with his tweets. In the end, Donald Trump lost not just his “kingdom” and the key to that kingdom – his Twitter handle – but the prospect of a possible return to power given a second impeachment. The take-down of Trump, as a creature created by mainstream media and social media – let’s not forget his first delusions of grandeur were incubated on the sets of

US gets vaccine against Corona but not Trumpism

US gets vaccine against Corona but not Trumpism January 13, 2021, 3:51 PM IST The author is a senior journalist and a political commentator. If 2020 will be remembered as the year of Corona, 2021 will be etched in history as the year when Donald Trump supporters finally exposed the Ugly American before the world. The US of A has been touted as the great melting pot of cultures. Immigrants from across the world throng its shores hoping their “American Dream” will come true. For centuries WASPs, KKK and their ilk kept up the charade of the US being a land of equality even while exploiting, brutalising and maltreating the Blacks, Hispanics, East Europeans, Asians and women of all colours but the mask was brutally yanked off and the US became the laughing stock on January 6, 2021.

The American parliamentary confirmation of Democrat Joe Biden’s election as their next president was held at Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on 6 January. The formality was marred by large-scale protests outside the building, by crowds waving banners and flags. They, like millions of Republicans, believed that Biden had won by a combination of vote-bank politics and electoral irregularities and were intent on volubly showing their disfavour towards the verdict.

Tharoor and Varun spar on Twitter over tricolour at Capitol | India News

NEW DELHI: An Indian flag fluttering during the siege of Capitol Hill led to a war of words between BJP MP Varun Gandhi and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Twitter on Thursday. The hashtag, Indian Flag, also generated a social media buzz trending on the microblogging platform. “Why is there an Indian flag there??? This is one fight we definitely don’t need to participate in.” the BJP politico wrote around 11.30 am, while sharing a video of the violence that erupted in Washington DC. The 18-second video shows a mob shouting “We Want Trump”, while the tricolour can be seen in the lower left corner of the frame.
