We’ve been to the rallies and the vigils, but on Thursday, U.S. Representative Elaine Luria (D, 2nd District) addressed the rise in gun violence at a town hall. She took questions from the crowd that ranged from raising the minimum wage, to the January 6th insurrection, to Critical Race Theory. The night ended on a somber note, about the rise in gun violence all over the country and right here in Hampton Roads.

This weekend the community will get together to remember a man who gets much of the credit for this political sea change. Al Brooks was a familiar figure outside the Woodbridge DMV where he would sometimes setup a table and urge people to register to vote. In election season he pushed them to cast their ballots always dressed up and wearing his signature bow tie.
