For anyone who dares to be an Oscar completist, watching the Academy Award-nominated shorts is a fascinating task.
Fifteen mini-movies over the course of three categories animated, live-action and documentary showcase a variety of incredible talent and dazzling visuals from around the world. No one can walk away from this epic feat (at 5 1/2 hours this year) without learning much about the current state of the human condition.
Watching all of these films can be emotionally draining. Given the limited timeframe (less than an hour) of the stories, filmmakers often go for the most dark and harrowing subjects. Perhaps those adjectives do not go far enough. There’s a number of nominees dealing with the death of children that are downright horrific.
