(KEYC) - The Twin Valley Council Boy Scouts of America recently completed their annual scouting for food campaign. They collected the equivalent of almost 67,000 pounds of food for 24 separate food shelves throughout 15 Southern Minnesota counties. They collected almost 36,000 pounds of actual food and an additional $2,574 in cash donations. Part of the Scout Law is to be Helpful and Friendly which teaches the scouts about the importance of helping the community prosper and grow together.

(KEYC) - The Living Earth Center, known for its community gardens where people can grow their own food is expanding its local produce donation capacity. The Living Earth Center has partnered with Blue Earth County to take over the management of the Blue Earth County Community Farm. “What I love about this opportunity is it really provides a layer where the community can come together and help address a lot of the challenges our entire community faces. (Such as) issues of food insecurity, issues of sustainability,” explained Living Earth Executive Director Laura Peterson.

(KEYC) - A former state house candidate has donated leftover campaign funds to some area non-profit organizations. Leroy McClelland, who ran for the Minnesota House 23B seat has dissolved his campaign treasury and is donating the money to local food shelves and homeless shelters. “There are many people hurting right now and their needs are much more pressing than the next election” McClelland said. “After the bills were paid there was about $4,000 left in the treasury and I just decided that it was more important to help people who are hurting right now than to save the money for later.”
