Chilean authorities announced that 58 people that were at two military bases in Antarctica or on a navy ship that went to the continent tested positive for the new coronavirus. So far no other country with a presence in Antarctica has publicly reported any other cases. Chile’s army announced Monday that 36 people at the Gen. Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme Antarctic base have tested positive, and on Tuesday the health minister for the Biobio region in Chile said there are 21 infections involving people aboard the Chilean navy’s Sergeant Aldea supply vessel.

By Hanie Abdul Razak|   Published: 23rd December 2020 3:17 pm IST The coronavirus has now reached every continent of the earth as Chile’s armed forces announced this Monday that 36 people have tested positive for the virus at its Gen Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme Antarctic base. They said the positive cases include 26 army personnel and 10 civilians of a maintenance contract company.  Afterwards, on Tuesday, the Health Minister for the Biobio region said there are 21 personnel on a navy supply vessel headed to Antarctica called the Sergeant Aldea that tested positive.

The plan, yet to be approved, calls for the use of rapid COVID-19 tests and contact tracing. ►Luke Letlow, a Louisiana Republican who was elected as a U.S. Representative in November, was transferred to the intensive care unit of a Shreveport hospital to continue treatment for COVID-19. Letlow, 40, is in stable condition.
