Former Red Deer Rebel
Brandon Hagel had an excellent 24-point rookie campaign, taking advantage of the ice time afforded him while the Chicago Blackhawks transition from the glory days to the new era. Hagel, 22, also has the benefit of having started the year in the Swiss League with HC Thurgau, so the big ice surface in Latvia will not be a shock to him. The Morinville, AB-native put up over 300 points over his four-year career in Red Deer between 2015 and 2019, and so expect him to have an important offensive role.
Ex-Kelowna Rocket (and Notre Dame Hound)
Dillon Dube had an up-and-down season, much like the rest of his Calgary Flames compadres. The speedster with two World Juniors under his belt can do it all, be it at wing or centre, in an offensive or shutdown role, so this is a great opportunity for Dillon to end the year on a high note and get his feet wet at the senior level for Hockey Canada. If you can skate, you’ll get a chance; and boy can he skate.
Coward seizes opportunity in the crease
May 10, 2021
Chase Coward took full advantage of the opportunity when he was finally able to get in between the pipes for the Red Deer Rebels this season.
Coward was a spectator for the first 18 games of the season before playing in four of the final five games to wrap up the 2020-21 season. He made his first start of the season on April 19 against the host Medicine Hat Tigers in a 3-2 loss.
“I was super excited when I finally got told that I was going to get a start. I just wanted to go out there and prove to myself and to everyone else that I belonged in the league. I did that and then the starts kept coming in and the confidence just kept going up.”

The dominant team in the WHL’s Central Division during the 2020-21 season wrapped up their campaign in style on Thursday night.
The Edmonton Oil Kings finished off their campaign with an impressive 20-2-0-1 mark at Co-op Place in Medicine Hat as they came away with a 3-0 shutout over the Medicine Hat Tigers.
While the Oil Kings were able to capture their third straight Central Division title, the COVID-19 pandemic meant that they wouldn’t be able to showcase their squad in the playoffs for the second straight spring after reaching the Eastern Conference in 2019 before falling to the Prince Albert Raiders.
