There are lots of excuses for the continuing decline in teaching American history in public schools. But in some states, Tennessee for example, something is finally being done about it with Gov. Bill Lee expanding a program he began to recognize schools and districts that prioritize teaching history and civic values.
We’ve been aware of the erosion in teaching history for decades. In 1985, the New York Times found that “If knowledge of the past is in fact relevant to our ability to understand the present and to exercise freedom of mind - as totalitarian societies, both real and fictional, acknowledge by stringently controlling what may be studied or published - then there is cause for concern about many Americans’ sense of history.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) â Two days after Gov. Bill Lee announced an executive order that seeks to limit gatherings to just 10 people, Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris says his office won t be enforcing that.
Farris released a statement Tuesday, saying the sheriffâs office would not use its resources to ârestrict your constitutional liberty⦠especially while hundreds of people are allowed to be in grocery stores together on any given day of the week.â

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Mike Osborne) The Putnam County Sheriff said Tuesday he will not enforce Gov. Bill Lee’s new COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings.
Lee on Sunday ordered gatherings be held to 10 people or less statewide, with a number of exceptions.
Sheriff Eddie Farris released a statement Tuesday saying in part that “the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will NOT be using our resources to restrict your constitutional liberty.”
He went on to encourage residents to “make the right choices and decisions” and “enjoy your family and have a Merry Christmas.”

Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris announced today following months of leads, surveillance, and investigation, his office launched a countywide inter-agency operation called ‘Tis the Season’. It was the outcome of 26 grand jury indictments that resulted in the arrest of fourteen individuals with multiple charges being filed. Additionally, eight of these individuals were already in custody when served with the indictments.
Deputies from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the 13th Judicial Drug Task Force, along with other assisting agencies including the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Department of Corrections conducted a lawful search and seizure operation after receiving several leads regarding information on possible drug activity.
