Des Moines Register Iowa House lawmakers have passed a wide-ranging bill strengthening legal protections for police and raising penalties for protest-related offenses. Wednesday s House debate, which frequently invoked last summer s protests for racial justice, came as former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for murder in the death of George Floyd, a Black Minneapolis man, and as Minnesota has seen renewed protests over the police killing of another Black man, Daunte Wright. The chamber passed the legislation Wednesday evening on a 63-30 vote, with eight Democrats joining 55 Republicans to vote yes. Two Republicans, Rep. Eddie Andrews of Johnston and Rep. Jeff Shipley of Fairfield, joined 28 Democrats in voting no. Seven representatives were absent. The bill now returns to the Senate for consideration.

Those conversations are what prompted the move for legislation. A woman might get her uterus removed for various medical reasons, including cancer.
