(David Moir/Bravo) U.D.O. or Unidentified Dominican Object : that was Oakland chef Nelson German s sci-fi solution to a movie-themed challenge on this season of Bravo’s Top Chef.
The dish was a variation on a pupusa, a flat disk made of corn, jerk pork and candied yams.
German, who is Dominican American, was the only California contestant on the show this season.
“The pressure was on,” German says, in the kitchen of his newest Oakland restaurant, SobreMesa. “The minute you see that big Top Chef sign for the first time, it s like you re a line cook all over again. I just kept thinking about why I m here. It s representing a movement, showing a person of color can run beautiful restaurants and bars and really be a fantastic chef and give back to the community.”

Promoting Revitalization of Both Neighborhoods (Updated 5/19)
San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced today that the city will provide $5 million for an innovative strategy to reduce drug dealing in the Tenderloin and Mid-Market. The Mayor’s “Mid-Market Vibrancy and Safety Plan” will help fund Urban Alchemy, a community organization with a track record for improving public safety in troubled areas of San Francisco. The mayor has also committed $3.8 million in the following budget year, showing the city is doing more than offering a short-term fix for stabilizing both neighborhoods.
Under the plan, community ambassadors will be stationed on each block of the area for 10-12 hours per day. The SFPD will also increase deployments in the area, including foot patrols, motorcycle and bicycle deployments, and officers on horseback. The police deployment begins Wednesday, May 19 and the Community Ambassadors will begin June 15 and ramp up to full coverage over the summer.

And from the governorâs office, signs that a normal summer could be coming, too.
âWhen the governor said on that Tuesday âa very normal-looking summer,â I jumped out of my skin. I got so excited,â recalled Ed Lee, executive director at St. Peter Chamber of Commerce.
Last week, Gov. Tim Walz announced that all capacity and distancing restrictions will end in May, making way for cities like St. Peter to beginning planning their summer events schedules.
