Opinion/Zyons: COVID protocols in place, racers ready again to run
Karen Zyons
Karen Zyons is the co-owner and chief operating officer of Rhode Races & Events.
In March of 2020, the events business came to a screeching halt. Weddings, concerts, theater productions and events of all kinds, including road races, were canceled.
The impact to these businesses has hurt our local and national economies in so many ways. When our road races were canceled, it wasn’t just our company that took a hit. It impacted the local timer, photographer, race announcer company, the area hotels where the runners stay the night before the race, the charities the races benefit and the volunteer groups that rely on the funds raised from helping out at the event, just to name some of those affected.

Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association urges users to ‘Take It Outside’
Each year, portable generators are a lifesaver for thousands of consumers, providing temporary emergency power in storms and natural disasters. They also bring the fun for gatherings away from a ready power supply, like tailgating and outdoor parties. However, improper use of portable generators can have deadly consequences due to the presence of carbon monoxide.
Because of the cases of misuse, the Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association (PGMA) has created the Take It Outside campaign. The trade association and the Take It Outside campaign seek to develop and influence safety and performance standards for its industry’s products, and, as part of the campaign, developed a website dedicated to safe usage of portable generators.
