Marking bicentennial anniversary virtually

HERIOT-WATT University celebrated its bicentennial anniversary in conjunction with its Global Watt Day in a virtual event at its Malaysia campus. During the event, the university reaffirmed its ongoing commitment in supporting global recovery efforts in relation to Covid-19, focusing on research and by pioneering online and “responsive blended learning” approaches to inspire their graduates to be ambitious, resilient and enterprising. The university, which has a history dating back to 1821, has a global presence in 143 countries. This year, the university celebrated this milestone at its campuses in Scotland, Malaysia and Dubai, and with its global school members, students and alumni.

Jane Drew Prize for women in architecture awarded to Kate Macintosh

Scottish architect Kate Macintosh has been awarded this year s Jane Drew Prize in recognition of her contribution to elevating the profile of women in architecture. Macintosh, now retired, was selected in celebration of her work in public architecture and advocation for the use of buildings as a tool for social justice since the 1960s. The Jane Drew Prize is awarded annually by the Architects Journal and The Architectural Review as part of its W awards series, formerly known as the Women in Architecture awards. Previous winners of the prize, which is named after modernist pioneer Jane Drew, include the likes of Denise Scott Brown, Amanda Levete and Pakistan s first female architect, Yasmeen Lari.

Date Time New funding for innovative space tech to help solve problems on Earth Through the UK Space Agency, the government is giving a cash injection to 5 projects specifically designed to bring together UK business expertise with universities to help build space solutions to global problems, on UK soil. One of the projects, involving the University of Southampton, will use artificial intelligence to automatically detect buried archaeological remains on satellite imagery, providing construction companies with higher accuracy at an earlier stage. This will save them time and money during the planning permission process and help them to reduce their carbon footprint.
