It was a year ago today, Friday, March 13, 2020, that the official statement dropped. “The FA, Premier League, EFL and Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship have collectively agreed to postpone the professional game in England until 3 April at the earliest.” It seems, in hindsight, a laughably naïve notion – that football needed a three-week pause because of something called coronavirus, and could then think about getting going again. We should instead have dwelled on the date. Friday the 13th brought all the omens required and it was not until September that the game’s long suspension at Carlisle United’s level fully ended.
THE closure of a popular town centre clothes shop has been described as a sinister move by an online retailer. Burton, in Station Road, Clacton, has endured a turbulent and uncertain 12-months as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The clothing store s future was further plunged into doubt in December when its parent company, the Arcadia Group, entered administration. Online fashion company Boohoo subsequently purchased the Burton brand, along with Dorothy Perkins and Wallis, as part of a £25.2million deal. The agreement, however, did not include the acquisition of physical shops, so more than 2,400 employees, including those working in Clacton, lost their jobs.
