Coronavirus cases declined in Oregon for the second week in a row, reaching levels not seen since October.
Oregon’s decline in confirmed and presumed infections came amid a 9% drop in weekly testing. But while less testing may miss some infections, it doesn’t appear to be obscuring any hidden problems. In fact, the share of tests with positive results fell by nearly a full point week over week, reaching 3.4% the lowest level since October.
ZIP codes outside the Portland area again saw the most coronavirus cases last week. Cases are comparatively high in the college cities of Corvallis and Eugene, but also in Roseburg, Grants Pass, Medford, Salem and Redmond.

Coronavirus cases declined in Oregon last week as the state seemingly settled into a new normal: 4,000-something weekly confirmed or presumed infections.
Oregon has now seen three consecutive weeks below 4,800 cases, a feat that hasn’t happened since October. And it appears very likely Oregon will add a fourth week to the streak.
ZIP codes outside the Portland area saw the most coronavirus cases last week – with one major exception. The Portland ZIP code home to the Inverness Jail, where a large outbreak is infecting adults in custody, led the state in cases for a second week in a row.

LAKEVIEW, Ore. Governor Kate Brown s plan to close three Oregon state prisons would be a grave mistake, according to state lawmaker E. Werner Reschke, who represents much of Klamath and Lake counties.
Governor Brown s most recent budget proposal includes the closure of Warner Creek Correctional Facility in Lakeview, Shutter Creek in North Bend, and Mill Creek in Salem reviving and expanding on a proposal that originated in July of last year.

Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission and the Oregon Department of Corrections have entered into a new agreement to continue providing inmates with educational programming through community colleges across the state.
This comes after uncertainty last October when the Oregon DOC said it would be cutting ties with the six community colleges it contracts with. ODOC said at the time that was a move to bring its adult education programming in-house. Corrections officials had said it would help address the agency’s budget shortfall and an inconsistency of services they said the department was receiving through the current contracts.
