Man fulfilling mom’s legacy to educate about lung cancer screenings
“To have all these plans once you retire and to not make it,” LaPorte said.
He always pictured his kids growing up with grandpa and grandma around. That dream came to a tragic finale last October when LaPorte lost his last living parent.
“This is what I was scared of. They had all kinds of plans for grandkids, and I didn’t want it to end up like this,” LaPorte said.
LaPorte’s mom, Jeanine, was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer just days after the new year in 2015. She died just four months later.
Task Force Recommends Colorectal Cancer Screenings Begin at Age 45

Updated guidelines from the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force said screenings for colorectal cancer should begin when people are 45-years-old, which is five years earlier than the previous recommendation.
The rates of colorectal cancer, which is the number three cancer killer in America, have increased in people aged 45 to 50, Dr. Michael Barry, who is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and vice chair of the task force, told NBC News.
“We can make a substantial dent in that through screening,” Barry noted, adding, “Starting at age 45 can save additional lives and prevent additional cases by removing precancerous polyps.”
The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recently changed their recommendations for lung cancer screening, which could help save more lives.
âTheir update lowered the age limit from 55 to 50 and lowered the amount of smoking to 30 pack years down to 20 pack years. So their current recommendations would be ages 50 to 80, 20 pack year smoking history and youâve smoked within the last 15 years,â said Peter Mazzone, MD, Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Mazzone said by lowering the age limit, the number of people eligible for screening would increase by 80 to 90 percent.
However, even though more individuals now qualify, he said they are still facing the challenge of getting them tested. He said that is due to a couple of factors. For example, some may be hesitant for fear of finding out theyâre sick or they might not have insurance coverage.
