The Young and the Restless spoilers has some sad news to pass on about a beloved Y&R star from years past. Actress Marguerite Ray, who portrayed Mamie Johnson on the CBS soap, has passed away at the age of 89. Marguerite portrayed Mamie from 1980-1990.
According to The East Bay Times, Marguerite passed away on November 18, 2020, in Los Angeles. Marguerite was well-known for her role of Mamie Johnson on Y&R, but she also appeared in other popular series, including Sanford and Son, Sanford, and Dynasty.
On Sanford, Marguerite portrayed Evelyn Lewis, the girlfriend of Redd Foxx’s character.
Marguerite was born in New Orleans in 1931 and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1948. Marguerite was a recreation and entertainment director with the US Special Services in Germany between 1954-1959, and in 1969, she moved to Los Angeles, eventually bursting onto the television scene with roles in popular series such as The Bill Cosby Show, The Odd Couple, and Bewitched.

East Bay News reported Ray died on Nov. 18. Ray, the eldest of seven children, was born in New Orleans in 1931. She later moved to California with her family. After graduating from Oakland Technical High School in 1948, Ray obtained a degree in Recreation and Theatre Arts from UC Berkeley in 1953. Ray worked in the Bay Area then moved to Europe, where she served as a recreation and entertainment director with the U.S. Special Services in Germany from 1954-59.
Ray was bit by the acting bug in the 1960s. She returned from Europe and helped create The Aldridge Players-West, an acting troupe based in San Francisco that toured Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Marguerite Ray, the actress best known for portraying Mamie Johnson on the CBS soap opera “The Young and the Restless,” died on Nov. 18 at age 89.
According to an obituary in The Los Angeles Times, Ray died in L.A. last month after a long and storied career in show business. A cause of death was not stated.
Her role as Johnson, the nanny who raised the Abbot children on the show, made her the first Black performer to be a series regular on the long-running series. She played the character from 1980 until 1990, when the role was eventually taken over by Veronica Redd, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
