Patients and staff were evacuated from the building, but nobody was injured in the fire.
A 43 year old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
He remains in police custody today.
Detective Inspector James Entwistle of Leeds CID said: This was a very serious incident which caused significant damage to the hospital. Luckily no one was injured and everyone in the hospital was safely accounted for. I would like to appeal to anyone who was impacted by the fire in either the A&E or X-Ray department between 5 and 6pm to come forward with any information to assist our enquiries.
Prince Charles visited his local hospital in Tetbury on Wednesday to thank the staff for their continued hard work and support to the community during this unprecedented year. The small community hospital which became a charity 27 years ago has kept a service running throughout most of the pandemic. Tetbury Hospital were delighted to welcome their patron who last visited in 2015 and were keen to show The Prince of Wales how the hospital has adapted to the situation since March.
