On Monday night, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios could not contain his emotions at events held to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete at the Holy Monastery of Axion Esti, Northcote.
Speaking about the role of the church during the Battle of Crete, Archbishop Makarios told the tale of Erhardt Kestner, a German, who visited German cemetery of Crete in 1952 to pay his respects to his countrymen had lost their lives during the Nazi Occupation of Greece. There, he found a black-clad woman lighting candles at the graves of German soldiers.
“I approached her,” Kestner said. “And I asked her, ‘Are you from here?’.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Foundation Established
At the invitation of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America on Monday, April 5, 2021, Anthony J. Limberakis, MD, National Commander of the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Chair of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Board of Trustees offered an enlightening and informative presentation, including the attached PowerPoint slide deck (prepared by Foundation Trustee Aphrodite Skeadas, Communications Chair, and Archon John Mindala), to the Eparchial Synod regarding the establishment and current status of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Foundation.
In attendance were His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America; their Eminences Metropolitan Methodios of Boston, Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver, Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta, Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit, Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh, Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco and Metropolitan Nathanael of Chicago.
Dendias to meet Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias met with Archbishop Jerome in preparation for his trip to Ankara to meet his Turkish counterparts as well as the Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople (Κωνσταντινούπολις, Turkish: İstanbul).
“If Turkey maintains a good attitude, I will go to Ankara and I hope that there will be a resumption of negotiations,” said the foreign minister in a statement at the beginning of his meeting with the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece
“I do not have over-optimism, but at least there is a possibility to speak, within the framework of logic and law of course,” he continued.
