Constance B. Moore has been appointed as chair of its board of directors. Moore, who has served as an independent director on Columbia’s board since 2017, succeeds John L. Dixon, who has served as chair since 2012 and as a member of Columbia’s board of directors since 2008. Dixon has elected to step down as chair but will continue as an independent director on the board. Moore has more than 40 years of experience in the real estate industry, most recently serving as president, CEO, and a board member of BRE Properties. She previously held executive positions with Security Capital Group & Affiliates.

More than 30 Harvard workers and supporters called for contracted employees idled by the pandemic to receive paid leave in the spring during a rally in Harvard Yard Thursday. 32BJ Service Employees International Union, the union representing approximately 1,000 Harvard custodians and security guards, and Local 26, the local chapter of UNITE HERE that represents Harvard dining workers, organized the rally. The rally occurred one day before some contracted workers at the University will become ineligible to receive emergency pay if their jobs are suspended due to the pandemic, while idled workers who are directly employed by the University will receive up to 70 percent of their pay.

CMH picket sends strong message

Members of 1199 Service Employees International Union, United Healthcare Workers East, participated in the picket. The picket was held to call attention to the labor-management disagreement over salary raises and health care costs that have stalled negotiations during the pandemic. The picket took place in two shifts from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and another from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mayor Kamal Johnson, Common Council President Thomas DePietro, Mayoral Aide and 3rd Ward Supervisor Michael Chameides, 2nd Ward Alderwoman and Common Council Majority Leader Tiffany Garriga and 4th Ward Supervisor Linda Mussmann were among those in attendance at the first picket. As many as 70 picketers gathered as the earlier picket progressed, standing and marching on Columbia Street in 20-degree temperatures. Cars and emergency vehicles driving by showed support by honking.
