Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-07) and Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH-16) this week introduced a bipartisan resolution to establish a nationwide “Purple Star Families Week” and honor the sacrifice of families who have lost a loved one to veteran suicide.
Over the last 10 years, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that more than 20 U.S. veterans have died by suicide each day. Between 2005 and 2017, more veterans died by suicide than the total number of U.S. troops killed in the wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq combined.
Clarksville Now11 CMCSS schools recently earned purple star designations as military-friendly institutions.
CLARKSVILLE, TN – The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System is proud to announce 11 schools in the district have been awarded the Tennessee Purple Star School Award.
CMCSS had three schools that earned the Purple Star School Award a year ago – Ringgold Elementary, Rossview Middle and Rossview High. The Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) in Tennessee selected just 18 institutions across the state for this honor.
The Tennessee Purple Star School Award was designed to highlight military-friendly schools that show a major commitment to serving students and families connected to our nation’s military. Military-connected families make up 30-percent of the CMCSS population.

Robert O. Gibson Leadership Academy and Ernest A. Becker, Sr. Middle School in the Clark County School District have the honor of being the first-ever designated Purple Star Schools in Nevada. Both schools have shown a commitment to understanding and addressing the unique needs of military-connected students.
The Nevada Purple Star School Award is a designation provided to military-friendly schools that display a major commitment to serving military-connected students and families. The Purple Star certification lets military-connected families know that a school is dedicated to helping their child gain the educational skills necessary to graduate with the tools they need to build a home, a life, and a future.
