NITROGEN PLANNING: As planters start to roll across Nebraska, understanding and planning for nitrogen management is a crucial component to strong yields and profitability. Nebraska Extension specialists offer insights going into the 2021 growing season.

Here are answers to three common nitrogen management questions going into the 2021 growing season:
1. How can I reduce my nitrogen expense this year? Most of Nebraska was drier than normal in 2020 with less downward movement of soil water, nitrate leaching loss, crop nitrogen uptake and crop yield, particularly for rainfed crops. The residual nitrate-N from 2020 may be more than normal, giving the potential to reduce fertilizer-N rates for 2021.
